Localization — determining the position of a robot relative to landmarks or to absolute global geometry — is a fundamental challenge in mobile robotics. Wall-followers use ultrasonic and IR sensors to track their position relative to a wall or other barrier. GPS-equipped outdoor robots determine their absolute position by triangulating satellite signals.
